What do you want your child to be when they grow up?
When you have a vision for your children's education, as with any goal-setting exercise, it makes the next step of breaking the outcome down into smaller parts all the more easy.
You then have the ultimate underlying question of "does this achieve what I desire for my child?". If 'yes' then schedule it in, if 'no' then drop it - even if 'Mary' makes it look like the next best thing to sliced bread.
To be absolutely honest I found that there were few main skills that a child needs to become a 'successful' adult in the world (so perhaps that is not saying too much about the state of society) and a lot of room for pursuance of personal skills and character development so that they may become as unique an individual as circumstances allow.
Please take a moment to think about what the aim is for your child's education.
- What kind of person do you want them to be?
- What do you feel are the key subject areas that they need to learn and why?
- What important concepts do you hope to pass on from your education in life?
For those readers who are not home educating, what goals do you have for yourself? Where do you want to be in 5 years time? Who do you want people to know you to be? How could you break those goals down? Try to keep your goal at the forefront of your mind (or write it on a card that you can readily see or refer to) for the next 28 days and reflect on how it affects the decisions that you make on a daily basis.
