What's Our Plan?
Sometimes it helps to see what someone else has done to use that as a launching pad for your own ideas - a spring board into action.
So without further ado, I would like to share the specifics of our 12 year home education plan with you:
12 Year Plan (A4 landscape)
12 Year Plan (Letter landscape)
It will take some time to soak it all up as is always the case when you look at someone else's work, whereas if you take the time to design your own education plan then at the end of it you will have a sense of implicit understanding, and a whole lot of other rewards too.
For me, having a grand plan, put an end to being swayed by others strong recommendations for a particular product - I would review theirs, compare it to what I had chosen and if it was no better in meeting our goals for our children or our chosen method/style of imparting knowledge, I could simply forget about it.
Having a long-term plan gave me freedom to rest and know what was coming next. (Yes, I used the 'rest' word!)
It also meant that my husband, should he find himself in the tragic position of having to go it alone, had everything laid out, plain and simple. This also goes for whomever may educate the children instead - like my mother.
In an ever-increasing way the visual nature of seeing the overall scheme of learning helps a child conceive that there is an end in sight and that their application to learning dictates the pace. ie a faster pace could either mean an earlier finish or room to explore their own interests etc.
This goes for how we schedule the year as well, but that I'll leave to another post.
If you need further ideas about is age-appropriate to teach when, search online for "scope and sequence". This will turn up a variety of different results, from what is included in a specific grade level resource to entire years listings of subjects taught in different schools, in different areas, for different subjects.
One such place is World Book Encyclopedias
Here are some ideas for general English 'scope and sequence' to give you an idea of what I am talking about:
Listening, Viewing and Reading Overview are also available from this page.
From Queensland, Australia this document (scroll down to page 8 which is really where it starts).
More Scope and Sequence across other subjects available from the above site from here.
McGraw Hill K-6 (pdf)
If you need to meet or follow your State or National curriculum then add that name to the search ie "scope and sequence" idaho or "scope and sequence" Sweden
Happy surfing!
